Heat Treatment, Galvanising and Process Gas

Furnaces, galvanising baths, ovens and dryers use gas continuously and in quantity. Supplies are large, and a fault can stop production across a whole site.

We size and install pipework for the full connected load, with correct isolation and pressure control. Work is planned with your engineering team, carried out under your permit to work system and supported by a written risk assessment. Testing and purging follow IGEM/UP/1, and records are issued before plant is released back to production.

New Plant at i54 and the Business Parks

The i54 site on the northern edge of Wolverhampton, beside the M54, holds engine manufacturing, aerospace and other advanced engineering. Pendeford, the science park, Hilton Cross and Four Ashes have a similar mix of modern units.

New buildings and new production lines need gas plant commissioned to specification. We purge the supply, set up each appliance, record pressures and combustion readings and prove the safety interlocks. The standard is IGEM/UP/4. The commissioning record goes into the handover file.

What Is the Difference Between a Strength Test and a Tightness Test?

A strength test is carried out on new pipework. It uses a pressure above normal working pressure to prove that joints, fittings and the pipe itself can take the load. It is done once, before the pipework goes into service.

A tightness test proves that pipework is not leaking. It is done at a lower pressure, on new and existing pipework, after installation and after any alteration, repair or meter change. The section is pressurised, left to settle and monitored for a set period. The permitted drop depends on the pipework volume and the gauge used.

New pipework has both. You receive a certificate showing the results.

Purging Pipework In and Out of Service

Once tested, pipework is purged. Air is displaced with gas and vented outdoors at a safe point, with readings taken until the purge is complete. On larger volumes, nitrogen is used between the air and the gas so they never mix inside the pipe.

Purging out of service is the same process in reverse. It is important before any hot work, cutting or removal.

Older Works in Bilston, Willenhall and Wednesfield

Many local factories have been on the same site for generations. Layouts have changed many times, and the gas pipework has been extended, diverted and cut back along the way.

The result is often a system with dead legs, unlabelled valves and branches that may or may not be live. We survey the pipework, identify what each section feeds and decommission what is redundant by isolating, purging, capping and labelling it. The remaining system is tightness tested and the drawing is updated. External steel that has corroded is replaced.

City Centre Kitchens, Offices and the Hospital

Who Owns What, and Who Issues Permits?

Cadent runs the gas distribution network in the West Midlands and owns the pipework up to the emergency control valve. The meter belongs to your supplier or a meter asset manager. Everything after the meter is yours.

City of Wolverhampton Council is the highway authority. Walsall, Dudley and Sandwell councils cover the neighbouring boroughs, and Staffordshire County Council covers i54, Four Ashes and Codsall. Any excavation in a public road or footway needs a permit from the relevant authority.

Yearly Checks and the Records You Keep

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require employers to keep gas installations safe. For most Wolverhampton premises, an inspection every 12 months is the accepted way to show that. We issue records digitally, so they are easy to store and easy to produce for an insurer or auditor.
