Planned Shutdowns: Testing and Purging to a Programme

Large plants release their gas mains once or twice a year. Everything that needs the gas off has to be done inside that window: valve replacements, new branches, inspections, tightness testing and the purge back into service.

We plan this in advance with your engineering team. The pipework volume is calculated, the purge procedure is written, vent points are agreed and the nitrogen is ordered. A risk assessment under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations is prepared, and the work is carried out under your permit to work system.

Derby manufacturers are audited closely, so the records matter. Test certificates and purge records are issued before the plant goes back into production.

Nitrogen Purging for Large Pipework

A long 100 mm or 150 mm main holds a large volume. Letting gas straight into that much air would create a flammable mixture inside the pipe.

Nitrogen purging avoids this. Nitrogen displaces the air and is vented at a safe point outdoors, with oxygen readings taken until the level is low enough. Gas then displaces the nitrogen, and readings continue until the pipe holds gas only. The same process in reverse is used to make a main safe before it is cut.

Do You Need Hot Tapping or a Shutdown?

If a new branch is needed and the main cannot be released, hot tapping may be the answer. A fitting is attached to the live pipe, a valve is mounted on it and the pipe wall is drilled through the valve under pressure. The main stays in service throughout.

It is not right for every job. Pipe material, wall condition, pressure and access all have to be suitable. We will tell you plainly whether a hot tap or a short planned shutdown is the better option.

Mills on the Derwent

The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site begins at the Silk Mill in the city centre and runs north through Darley Abbey, Belper and Cromford. Many of the mills now hold offices, studios, restaurants and wedding venues.

How Is Old Plant Decommissioned?

When a furnace, oven or boiler is retired, its gas supply should be retired with it. We trace the branch back to a suitable isolation point, purge the gas out, cut back and cap the pipe, and label it. The live pipework is then tightness tested and the line drawing updated.

Cadent, the City Council and the County

Cadent runs the gas distribution network in the East Midlands and owns the pipework up to the emergency control valve. New supplies, larger meters and disconnections are arranged with Cadent or through your gas supplier.

Derby City Council is the highway authority within the city boundary. Derbyshire County Council covers the surrounding districts, including Belper, Ripley, Ilkeston and Swadlincote. A permit is needed from the relevant authority before excavating in a public road or footway.
