New units at Ansty Park, Whitley and the business parks around the A45 and A46 are handed over to demanding occupiers. Test cells, paint and cure ovens, laboratories and clean rooms all need gas plant that performs exactly as specified.

Commissioning is where that is proved. We confirm the pipework test records, purge the system, then set up each appliance. Working pressure, burner settings, combustion readings and safety interlocks are checked and written down. The relevant standard for industrial and commercial plant is IGEM/UP/4.

The result is a commissioning record that goes into the handover file, and a system the occupier can rely on from day one.

How Long Does a Tightness Test Take?

It depends on the size of the installation. The engineer pressurises the pipework, lets it settle so that temperature does not distort the reading, then watches the gauge for a set test period.

On a small kitchen supply this can be done in well under an hour. On a large factory system, the volume of the pipework means longer settling and test times, which are calculated using IGEM/UP/1. Every appliance on that section is off while the test runs, so we agree a shutdown window with you first.

If the pressure holds within the permitted limit, the pipework passes and a certificate is issued.

Warehouse and Logistics Parks

The motorway links that once served the car plants now serve distribution. Large sheds at Keresley, Lyons Park, Binley and Bayton Road in Exhall are heated by gas fired warm air or radiant systems mounted at high level.

Each heater needs a correctly sized supply, proper support for the pipework and safe access for maintenance. We install and test these systems, and we service and certify them once they are in use.

Destratification fans are often added in tall sheds across Coventry. They push warm air back down to floor level, which cuts running costs.

Universities, the Hospital and the City Centre

Coventry University, the University of Warwick on the south western edge of the city, and University Hospital at Walsgrave each run large boiler plant, catering operations and laboratory gas. Supply has to be maintained, so work is phased and planned with the estates team.

Decommissioning Before Demolition or Refit

Large parts of the city centre are being redeveloped. Before a building is stripped out or demolished, its gas installation has to be made safe.

We isolate the supply, purge the pipework to a safe point outdoors, and cap and label what is left. The meter and service pipe are then removed by the gas supplier and the network. A written record of the decommissioning gives the demolition or fit out contractor confidence that the building is dead.

Is Nitrogen Purging Always Necessary?

No. Small systems can be purged directly, with gas displacing air under controlled conditions. IGEM/UP/1A covers this for smaller low pressure installations.

Nitrogen purging is used when the pipework volume is large. Nitrogen goes in first and pushes the air out. Gas then pushes the nitrogen out. At no point do gas and air mix inside the pipe. We work out which method applies before we quote.

Gas Network, Council and Highways

Cadent operates the gas distribution network across the West Midlands and owns the pipework up to the emergency control valve. New supplies and upgrades are arranged with Cadent or through your gas supplier.

Coventry City Council is the highway authority within the city. Warwickshire County Council looks after roads in Nuneaton, Bedworth, Rugby, Kenilworth, Warwick and Leamington Spa. Excavating in a public road or footway needs a permit from whichever authority is responsible.
