What Kind of Commercial Gas Work Do We Do in Bradford?

Commercial Gas Certificate works on gas systems in commercial and industrial premises. We install and repair pipework, carry out strength and tightness testing, purge systems into and out of service, commission appliances and issue gas safety certificates.

Mills With a Second Life

The Bradford district is full of stone built mills and warehouses. Little Germany, Manningham, Saltaire and Keighley all have examples that now hold offices, apartments, studios and workshops.

These buildings once ran on a single large boiler house with steam mains across the site. Converting them usually means decommissioning that old plant and installing separate, smaller supplies for each tenant. We purge and cap the redundant pipework, then install, test and commission the new system.

Many of the mills are listed, and Saltaire is a World Heritage Site. External pipework, meter housings and flues may need consent from the council, so we plan routes with that in mind.

Kitchens That Made the City Famous

Bradford is known across the country for its curry houses, and the restaurants along Leeds Road, Great Horton Road and in the city centre work their gas equipment hard.

High output burners, tandoors and ranges need a supply that can deliver full load without the pressure dropping. We check sizing, install and test pipework, and fit the interlock between gas and extraction that BS 6173 requires. Factory Pipework, Steam and Process Heat

Food manufacturing, chemicals, printing and engineering are all significant employers in Bradford. Sites at Euroway Trading Estate, Low Moor, Bowling Back Lane, Dudley Hill and along the Aire Valley use gas for ovens, steam boilers and space heating.

Testing and Purging Step by Step

1. New pipework is strength tested to prove the joints and fittings.
2. A tightness test follows. The pipework is pressurised, allowed to settle, then monitored for a set period.
3. If it passes, the system is purged. Air is displaced with gas, or with nitrogen first on larger volumes.
4. Gas readings are taken at the vent point until the purge is complete.
5. Appliances are lit and checked, and the results are recorded.

The procedures come from IGEM/UP/1 and IGEM/UP/1A. You receive a certificate for the test and a record of the purge. See gas testing and purging.

When Should Gas Pipework Be Decommissioned?

Whenever it no longer serves a purpose. Pipework left live after a boiler is removed, a kitchen is closed or a unit is vacated is a hazard. It can be cut into by mistake or damaged during later building work.

Decommissioning means isolating the section, purging the gas out to a safe point outdoors, capping it with a proper fitting and labelling it. We then tightness test whatever remains in use.

Commissioning New Boilers and Heaters

When a new boiler, water heater or warehouse heater is installed, it has to be commissioned before use. We check working pressure, set the burner, take combustion readings and prove the safety devices. The figures are recorded and left with you. See commercial heating systems.

Timing matters. A heating system commissioned in early autumn has time to settle before it is needed every day. We also check that ventilation to the plant room suits the new appliance, because a replacement boiler does not always need the same air supply as the one it replaces.

Certificates for Landlords, Tenants and Insurers

Employers and landlords must keep gas installations safe under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. For most Bradford premises, an inspection every 12 months is the accepted way to show that.

The Gas Network, the Council and the Clean Air Zone

Northern Gas Networks runs the gas distribution network here and owns the pipework up to the emergency control valve. New connections and upgrades are arranged with the network or through your supplier.

City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is the highway authority. It issues permits for any excavation in a public road or footway.

The Clean Air Zone covers the city centre and extends along the Aire Valley towards Shipley and Saltaire. It charges older lorries, vans, buses and taxis, not private cars. It does not change the gas work, but it can affect deliveries of plant and materials.
