Pipework Installation and Alterations

Every installation starts with the load. We total the appliances, allow for future plant and size the pipework so that pressure at each appliance is correct with everything running. See commercial gas installation.

Steel is used for larger sizes, copper for smaller runs and polyethylene below ground. Pipework is supported, sleeved through walls, fire stopped and labelled, with isolation valves where they can be reached quickly.

Where a building is some distance from the meter, or several buildings share one supply, a buried polyethylene main is often the most practical route. See underground gas pipework.

How Do You Test and Purge Commercial Gas Pipework in Southampton?

1. Isolate the section and, on new pipework, carry out a strength test.
2. Pressurise for the tightness test and allow the pipework to settle.
3. Monitor the pressure for the test period set by IGEM/UP/1 or IGEM/UP/1A.
4. If it passes, purge the air out through an outdoor vent, using nitrogen first on large volumes.
5. Take readings at the vent until the purge is complete, then light and check each appliance.
6. Record the test and the purge, and issue the certificate.

Marine, Port and Industrial Sites
